Debt is consolidated into a three- to five-year repayment plan, which, if successful, eliminates a percentage of the debt at the completion of the repayment period. One monthly payment is made to a bankruptcy trustee who will then disburse payment to creditors. Chapter 13 bankruptcy allows individuals to catch up on mortgage payments and regain control of their finances without losing their home to foreclosure.
